OUR MISSION

Founded in 2009, Arquetopia is an award-winning, Mexican official nonprofit foundation promoting Development, social transformation and productivity through artistic, cultural, and educational programs. The core of the Foundation is Sustainable Development through four principles embodied in all of Arquetopia’s programs and activities: social awareness, shared responsibility, innovation, and local networks development. Arquetopia is experienced in negotiation and reinvestment of resources for local arts development in Mexico with the following features: social scope; quality; synergy; collaboration; innovation; viability; reciprocity; and respect for local knowledge.

ARCHETYPE (Latin archetypum  an original, Greek archétypon  a model, pattern). The original pattern or model from which all things of the same kind are copied or on which they are based; a model or first form; prototype.

UTOPIA (literally: no place, from Greek ou  not + topos  a place). Any real or imaginary society, place, state, etc., considered to be perfect or ideal

After our founding directors, Mexican visual artist and curator Francisco Guevara and American classical musician Chris Davis, invested their hard work and entire personal savings, our small nonprofit arts foundation was born in the majestic, vibrant and historic city of Puebla in 2009. Having initially functioned as an educational art center for inner-city youth, Arquetopia soon expanded to offer international artist residency programs in under a year and opened a second residency space in the city of Oaxaca in 2011. Arquetopia has since grown to include the premier artist residency programs of Mexico and Latin America, with extensive collaborative networks in central and southern Mexico. Our resident artists have come from dozens of countries on six continents, and many have returned multiple times.

Arquetopia is run entirely by artists. Operating independently on funds from self-sustaining programs, Arquetopia remains strictly unaffiliated with any political, religious, or war-industrial/weapon-building entities.

Arquetopia is committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of our diverse local and international community. Arquetopia's resident artist and staff backgrounds vary in all aspects. As part of Arquetopia’s mission is to promote diversity, Arquetopia actively fights discrimination by offering access to its programs and activities without regard to race, color, gender or gender expression, national origin, age, religion, creed, or sexual orientation.
